The Play in the Context of Hospitalized Children: an Experience Report

This report discusses the academic experience of Occupational Therapy course with children hospitalized in a public health service in the city of Maceió, Alagoas. The experience was made through an extension project of UFAL, in partnership with UNCISAL, namely Duty smile. The project promotes actions aimed at promoting the health of children in the hospital, through the promotion of play with the performance of clowns-doctors who provide their Saturdays to bring joy to an environment where it is not present every day. The intervention period took place from August 2013 to June 2015, with children of various ages and diagnostic possibilities. Hospitalization of children, it is often regarded as a traumatic experience in which the same face significant separation from family and friends, going to live, even if a short time, in a physical environment that does not have characteristics and appropriate activities your age1. Thus, the play appears as a possibility to change the daily life of hospitalization, producing a more pleasant reality. From the perspective of occupational therapy, the process that involves the play can be seen as a valuable therapeutic tool, considering that the child will be involved in the field of its own, namely the play as it is playing the child is able to know their environment and experience different situations through creativity and expression contained in their actions2. Thus, during the period of the experiment it was observed that the dynamics of the hospital setting allowed the child a space capable of meeting your needs as an active being whose main social role of the player. So the lived experience allowed understanding the importance of a focused intervention process to the needs of the subject, understanding this as a being who has the capacity to act and react to their environment, regardless of the situations that limit. As well as the development of new knowledge when it comes to playing analyzed from the point of view of occupational therapy, which is able to instill in the child’s autonomy, emphasizing the pleasure contained in their actions and improving its ability to act.
