Health Education in an Institution for Elderly Long Stay: Experience Report

The Brazilian population, because it was considered young for a long time, did not care about the defense of the dignity and welfare of the elderly (IBGE, 2010). Given these facts, many families for so many reasons, end up sending them to the institutionalization. The elderly in the process goes through several stages, a rapid transformation that leaves home, a family, to live with strangers1,2. When working with older people is essential to encourage them to develop self-care so that they can acquire behaviors that lead to health3. The practical activities in this regard prevent so thay develop a passivity, idleness and negative feelings revived by the absence of families.This is a descriptive study, describing the experience of a group of students of Occupational Therapy course of UNCISAL, where activities were held for four months, once a week, in the afternoon, in the second semester of the school year 2014, with the group of womem jumble through the partnership signed between UNCISAL and institution that belongs to the Archdiocese of Maceió.The process began with the identification of skills and functional limitations, later with the planning of the activities of which were dedicated to seeking the physical and emotional weel-being, aiming at functional capacity, keeping the elderly active as long as possible. Educational activities favor the elderly a new form of care, enhancing the development of the autonomy of the subject, focusing on the singularities and respecting the limitations of each. The practical activities of the course make the days of the institutionalized elderly are more productive and valued, since the self-care, feelings and interpersonal relationships are also valued. It is extremely important to develop na understanding of aging, limitations inherent in that natural process and understand it as part of a set that can be improved by means of interpersonal relations, contact with nature and exercise, and promote the building a positive view of aging and valuing the elderly.
