  • Relation of attitudes toward environment and animals with social and criminal-aggressive profile of adult inmates in school classes of a correctional facility

Aim of this research is to detect determinants and effects of environmental and animal-related attitudes of inmates. A sample of correctional facility inmates in the prison secondary school was collected in 2015 (class A=23 inmates, average 36 years, and B=12 inmates, average 33 years old, all male). Standardized questionnaires were answered and analytic statistics (Spearman test) was used. Preference for socialization or loneliness in nature or urban environment, aggression to animals, vegetarianism and susceptibility to environmental practices are correlated with the inmates criminal and behavioral profile as well as with their advancement in the education program of the prison school. Their education in prison seems to have positive environmental education effects. Positive attitudes of inmates toward animals is related with their family background, susceptibility of loneliness in nature, no hunting, involvement in environmental or cultural organization, susceptibility to impulsively impose protective values and norms, minimal aggressiveness, no crimes committed under angry circumstances or cyber-crimes, socializing in prison. Thereby, there is a noticeable accordance of vegetarianism, nature- and animal- attitudes of the inmates.

  • Exploring the need for government energy policy-makers to consider social impacts

As governments around the world aim to develop and enact policies that promote benefits to the public good, there is an increasing need to identify and acknowledge the social impacts of such policies. In some cases, the social impacts may be unexpected. An example is the social impact related to renewable energy policies, particularly as related to industrial-scale wind power generation. In Ontario, Canada, the push toward large-scale or utility-scale wind power development has resulted in: economic change; social discontent in some affected rural communities; and, concerns about adverse health effects. If the usual avenues of social input to decision-making processes have been removed by legislation, an imposed government policy may result in loss of confidence and, despite the government’s good intentions, may not achieve the intended outcome. While citizens may protest that a policy has inflicted significant social change without consent, some governments may maintain that the overarching goal of environmental benefit outweighs social concerns. This article explores the social impact of wind energy development in Ontario, Canada’s rural communities, and suggests a greater role for social research in informing future policy development.

  • Electrochemical study of methimazole and its direct determination in pharmaceutical preparations and human serum by square wave and differential pulse voltammetry

Two simple and rapid methods were developed for the determination of methimazole in pharmaceutical preparations and human serum by square wave and differential pulse voltammetry. The anodic peak at +0.60 V obtained in a buffer on glassy carbon electrode was used for analysis. The peak current and peak potential depend on pH, scan rate and initial potential. Decrease of the anodic peak with increasing pH, as well as deviations from linear plots of ip = f(C) and ip = f(C) and ip = kv1/2 indicate that this peak at higher concentrations is affected by adsorption-desorption phenomena. The linearity was established over the concentration range of 10-80 ug/mL for both methods in supporting electrolyte and human serum. The repeatability and reproducibility of the methods for all media (such as supporting electrolyte and serum samples) were determined. Precision and accuracy were also checked in all media. Developed methods in this study can be applied to Thyromazol tablet. Also, the proposed techniques were successfully applied to spiked human serum samples. No electroactive interferences from the endogenous substances were found in the serum samples.

  • Improving cryopreservation capacity of ram spermatozoa by supplementing the diluent with melatonin

The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the efficiency of supplementing ram semen extender with melatonin on cryopreservation capacity of spermatozoa. A total of 80 ejaculates were collected from 5 Barki rams, 16 ejaculates each, by an artificial vagina throughout the period from January – February, 2017. Ejaculates of each collection session were pooled and diluted (1:10) with glycerolated Tris-citric egg yolk extender, and were split into 4 portions. The first portion served as control (melatonin-free), whereas the other 3 portions were supplemented with 0.1, 0.2 or 0.3 mM melatonin. The post-thaw objective assessment of cryopreserved spermatozoa, in all groups, was conducted by a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. The results revealed that melatonin supplementation was positively correlated (P

  • Analysis on Occupational Self-Efficacy of Elementary Mathematics and Science Teachers

In this study, the purpose is to analyze the self-efficacy beliefs of the elementary mathematics and science teachers according to a group of variables. For this purpose, “Teacher Occupational Self-Efficacy Scale” developed by Kahyaoğlu and Yangın (2007) and personal information form that is composed by the researcher are used as the data collection tool to measure the self-efficacy of teachers. The study is conducted in the spring semester of the 2016-2017 school year. The sample of the study consists of a total of 91 teachers, of which 44 are Elementary Mathematics Teacher and 47 are Science Teacher serving in public schools in Bitlis’s Tatvan district. For the analysis of the collected data, the unpaired t-test and ANOVA were applied. According to the results of the analysis, it is found that occupational self-efficacy levels of prospective teachers are on “Very Efficient” level. In addition, it is determined that there are no statistically significant differences in mean scores of teachers’ occupational self-efficacy beliefs in terms of gender, education type, and the graduated department but in terms of the types of high schools which they graduated from. Only this variable shows a statistically significant difference.

  • Feelings about sexuality of South Korean international student couples in Japan

Introduction: South Korean international students are the fourth largest number of international students in Japan. Japan and Korea have similar sexuality-related issues, such as declining birthrates, increasing ages of marriage and childbirth. The purpose of this study is to clarify the feelings of Korean international student couples living in Japan about topics such as marriage, family planning, work-life balance, and sexual concerns in Japan and South Korea. Based on our study, we consider future supports for these students’ sexuality.
