  • Is Teacher Education level and Experience impetus for student achievement? Evidence from public secondary schools in Kenya

This study established whether advanced degrees and years of teaching experience are associated with student science achievement gains in Public Secondary schools in Kenya. In particular, the study differentiated education level into advanced degrees in Science and advanced degrees in any major, and experience into general years of teaching experience and years teaching Science in general and at grade 12. Teaching quality factors drawn from dynamic model of teacher effectiveness were utilized in the model to establish if they mediated the effect of teacher’s education level and experience on student achievement. A sample of 610 respondents was sampled consisting of 570 respondents consisting of 450 students and 120 grade 12 Science teachers was selected from 40 public secondary schools in the county.2-Level Hierarchical linear modelling was used to disentangle variance associated with students nested within classes and teachers nested within four categories of high rank and low rank schools in the County. The study found no variation in teacher qualification ,between high and low ranking secondary schools with respect to education level(X2=0.324; df =2, P=0.065, and experience (X2=0.824, df=3, P=0.066), but only with a small difference in grade 12 experience between low ranked and high ranked schools(X2=0.824, df=3, P=0.046). With regards to proportion of variance due to nested data, 20.8% of variance in student achievement was amongst student while the rest was within classrooms (teachers). With regards to teacher experience, teachers with more than two years of grade 12 experience will improve student scores by 1.15 units while those teachers without such experience will improve scores by 0.83. With regards to education level, a teacher with advanced degree chemistry or education will improve student achievement gains by 0.085 units, while that with no advanced degree in any major will result to only 0.067 unit increase in student chemistry achievement. • Missing Intrauterine Device (Copper T) Forming Stone in the Urinary Bladder

Intrauterine device (IUD) is the commonest method of contraception used by women. Complete migration into the urinary bladder though rare, results in lower urinary tract symptoms and stone formation around the migrated IUD. We present a 53 year old woman with a missing IUD (Copper T) who presented with lower urinary tract symptoms and haematuria. Cystoscopy showed a bladder stone anchored to the anterior bladder wall by an intrauterine device. She had cystolithotomy and retrieval of oblong shaped stone measuring about 3cm and intact IUD (Copper T) after failed endoscopic procedure. Adequate counselling prior to insertion is important. This will reduce the incidence of missing IUD.

  • The Effect of N,N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) on the Germination of Raphanus sativus (Radish Plants)

DEET is one of the major chemical constituents of bug repellant with an estimated global use of 7 million liters in 2016. While there has been research concerning the health safety of bug repellent, research concerning its environmental impact is very limited. This study was designed to determine the impact bug repellent on the germination of plant seeds. The build-up of bug repellent found in water and soil was simulated by exposing radish seeds to various concentrations of repellent during the germination process. This two-phased experimental set up demonstrated a significant correlation between higher bug repellent concentrations and lower germination rates. Even in the group containing 0.01% concentration of repellent, only 60% of seeds germinated comparing to 93.3% in the control group on day 10. The differences in germination rates was found to be statistically significant (P=0.0025). The experimental groups with repellents also delayed the process of germination.

  • Impacts of Infrastructure on One Country’s Trade An Analysis based on the new Eurasian Continental Bridge Economic Corridor along the One Belt One Road

In nowadays context of global economic integration, China has proposed the “One Belt One Road” Strategy in 2014, which fits into the new changes in global economy and finds us a new growth in economy development. This article has selected the panel data of 23 countries along the “new Eurasian Continental Bridge Economic Corridor” in 2002-2016 and analyzed the influences of one country’s economic infrastructure and social infrastructure upon its national trades using the fixed effect model. The research result shows that the construction of energy infrastructure may produce less obvious negative effects on one country’s national trade while the influences of the railway and aviation infrastructure will be varied because of the different natural endowments of the country. And one country’s trade will increase as construction of communication infrastructure develops. For social infrastructure, the effects upon one country’s trade are not obvious from education infrastructure construction, scientific research infrastructure construction, medical infrastructure construction and environmental infrastructure construction.

  • Chaotic Random Sequence Generated from Tent Map on Variant Maps

Chaotic sequences, have being widely used in mobile communications and cyberspace security. Using the sequences, various stochastic analysis schemes are developed. The Tent map is one of the widely used chaotic maps with good ergodic uniformity. In this paper, the variant maps are used to illustrate the Tent chaotic sequence under different lengths and control parameters to show the statistical characteristics of sequences. Results are shown that when the control parameter of Tent map is close to 0.5, the generated sequences have the symmetrical distribution, that is more stable if the sequence is longer.

  • Traffic Shaping for Congestion Control

The problem of congestion is not new to the field of telecommunications; its root can be traced back to the very foundations of the internet. Most, if not all networks, are currently faced with this problem. The distribution of resources on the network is very vital. The fact that resources are limited brought about major problem such that these limited resources would be shared among various workstations and nodes. As the network grows, and the number of workstations and nodes increases; resources become integral and if not properly managed no meaningful work will be done in such networks. Congestion control, which involved managing resources when the network utilization becomes so high, is of utmost importance so as to avoid congestion collapse. The complex calculations and computation carried out in the existing solutions, increase utilization as well as the problem of congestion. Traffic shaping algorithms provide solutions with little overhead and thus would be preferred to use in medium sized networks. This work proposes traffic shaping as a better solution for congestion control especially in medium size networks.

  • Regionalisation of hydrological model parameters in nested catchments

A prediction in ungauged basins is one of the challenging tasks for a hydrologist of this century. Even though the physically based hydrological models can be the more appropriate in ungauged basins but data requirement limit the use. Conceptual hydrological models are simple and easy to use. But these model needs calibration before it can be used. Availability of data at all location in the basin limits the calibration of conceptual hydrological models. In this study, a calibration methodology is presented for discharge series limited condition using upstream and downstream data from nested catchment. It has been found that reasonable model parameters can be estimated for middle catchment using immediate upstream and downstream data. The regionalised parameter at the catchment outlet was tested at several locations inside the catchment to test the suitability of the outlet based model parameter for the interior location along the channel. It has been found that the model parameters obtained at the outlet of the catchment by regionalisation methods can be applied to the neighbouring points along the channel. A conceptual hydrological model, HBV-IWS was used for on upper Neckar catchment to demonstrate the methodology.

  • To Examine Audit and Non-audit Fees Disclosed in the Annual Reports by Company and Industry

EachThis research aims to examine audit and non-audit fees disclosed in the annual reports by company and industry. Research questions are how audit and non-audit fees disclosed in German financial service companies? What are compositions of NAS fees in researched companies from 5 industries in 2015? What are trends of audit and non-audit fees in researched companies? And what are reasons behind trends? According to these questions, relative explanations and theories will be represented. The final research question is that are current regulations issued by the SEC, the PCAOB and the EC effective to eliminate adverse impacts of NAS? This research firstly examines how audit and non-audit fees disclosed in annual reports by company and industry, through investigating audit and non-audit fees in German financial companies and compositions of NAS fees in 61 companies from 5 industries in 2015, then observing trends of audit and non-audit fees in researched companies and exploring reasons behind trends. Finally trying to evaluate the effectiveness of regulations research issued by the SEC, the PCAOB and the EC. With regard to purposes to address these questions, since the topic of this research is about NAS, which cannot be comprehensively surveyed without the consideration of audit services, and they need to be compared with each other in the research process to arouse conclusions. Thus audit and non-audit fees are employed as the measurement of audit services and NAS provided by accountancy firms. Another important theme of this research is auditing regulations, as the final objective is to prove the justification of NAS, the effectiveness of legislations and regulations is evaluated, helping to get the conclusion.
