Post-colonial Study of Akachi Ezeigbo’s Trafficked
Post-colonial literature which has become a phenomenon for all nations examines, among others the anti-conquest narrative and the functional relations of social, cultural and political powers that sustained the tripartite governmental bodies of colonialism, post-colonialism and neo-colonialism. Since the colonialists viewed the masses as the ‘Other’ the well-being of the colonizers remained unchallenged as the nomenclature fluctuated from colonialists to post colonialists and to neo-colonialists. These named archetypal structures support all forms of corruption in which human trafficking and the inherent psychological trauma are apparently part. This paper examines post-colonialism in the Akachi Adimora Ezeigbo’s Trafficked through the theoretical framework of post-colonialism. The paper depicted the experience of the migrates in diasporas: ill-treatment of women: and also examined the ideology and practice of neocolonialism fixated on the ideology and practice of colonialism. The paper further portrayed the brazen corrupting influences of the post-colonialists and how they actively employed the ‘Us-and Them’ binary social relation to govern their community; which among others, are reflected on the realities of undue and illegal trafficking of young women prevalent in contemporary Nigerian society. The paper further observed that the post colonialists like their colonial masters and the neo-colonialists, use language as their most important vehicle to exercise powers through a mixture of coercion, persuasion, conflict and collaboration to imprison the colonized. It is the view of this paper that any human-being has the potential for redemption however dark their situation, as exemplified in the lives of the Nneoma and Efe: some of the deported essentialists commercial sex workers who for instance, settled down to some craftsmanship and family lives, Nneoma further gained admission into the University to further her education. Also the teachers, who had not been paid in almost one year because of the strike action they embarked upon, engaged themselves in other…
Comparing Places on Types of Internet Use
The analysis in this paper compares types of Internet use as reported in two places, North Carolina, U.S., North America, and Tolima, Colombia, South America. The Internet has changed the world and some basic functions of social life have become intricately linked to having access to and the ability to use the Internet. Yet, access to this important resource is not universal. Both of the places examined in this study have documented disparities in Internet access that produces a digital divide. With globalization, it is increasingly important to understand the advantages, and by default the disadvantages, that accompany the proliferation of the Internet. Using survey data collected from a random sample of citizens in each place, we compare types of Internet use and activities. Given the known differences of the digital divide, we select those with Internet access and focus on their types of use to understand the ways this resource is used by those who have it. This study contributes to the broader literature by focusing on Internet activities that transcend place and describes the most common ways people engage with the Internet.
Fruit Based Farming System and Threatened Landscape in the Wetlands of Abaya Chamo Basin, Southern Ethiopia
Ethiopia has diverse climate and altitude conditions, which are suitable for growing both tropical and temperate fruits. To this regard, wetlands in Abaya Chamo Basin have a promising potential for fruits and horticulture farming. But due to human induced constraints, the study wetlands are under immense pressure of degradation. The objective of the research was to examine the economic and environmental effect of fruit –based farming system in the wetlands of Abaya Chamo Basin. In the study mixed research approaches, specifically concurrent triangulation strategy was utilized. Data was collected both from primary and secondary sources. Using purposeful sampling technique three kebeles were selected as sample kebeles. From these kebeles, 180 sample household heads were proportionally selected as sample size using systematic random sampling technique. Finally collected data was analyzed using statistical package for Social Sciences, SPSS and Geographic Information Techniques, GIS. Furthermore, qualitative data was also elaborated using narration. The study findings revealed progressive transformation of land use types from traditional cropping system (sorghum, cotton and sweet potatoes) into more market oriented fruits and horticulture system. The survey data showed that mixed agriculture, (49.4%), cereals (18.9%) and fruit and horticulture (14.4%) are the three top reported household income sources in the area. The analysis of two period (1985 to 2016) satellite data showed that wetlands are dwindled by 663 hectare (20.7 ha per year) at the expense of cropland, which was increased by 506 hectares (15.8 ha per year). In Lake Abaya Chamo Basin, among others farmland encroachment into buffer areas (43.9%), deforestation of wetland (7.8 %), over-grazing (7.8%) and awareness related constraints (6%), development of saline soil (5.6%) and weed infestation (water hyacinth) are the top mentioned environmental challenges. Thus, to revert wetland degradation upland management, Lake buffer protection and increased institutional commitments are areas of intervention, which requires due…

The Cinematic Space in Stephen Daldry’s The Hours: A Heterotopian Perspective
The film The Hours directed by Stephen Daldry is based on an experimental novel in which three women from detached places and eras are interlinked by the book Mrs Dalloway. Given that, its sense of simultaneity and spatial heterogeneity is quite obvious. Adopting the notion of Heterotopia proposed by Michel Foucault, the current paper analyzes the juxtaposed construction of space and time in The Hours. It examines how the editing, recurring imagery and coherent motives in The Hours function in order to construct heterotopian space and to shed light upon central themes such as alienation, sexual identity and death. Through these meticulous filmmaking techniques, the film not only transfers the collapse and confluence of time and space from text to the screen, but also retouches its postmodernist aesthetics and social reflectivity, offering a thought-provoking viewing experience for the audience
Fake News in the American Sociological Review Claims that Asian Americans Don’t Really Value Education*
Lizardo (2017) seeks to improve the sociological analysis of culture by conceptualizing the distinction between “nondeclarative” versus “declarative” aspects of culture. Lizardo uses this contrast to critique the view that Asian values have any effects on Asian American educational attainment. We show that Lizardo’s summary of empirical studies of Asian American educational attainment is misconstrued. He misinterprets statistical findings and inadequately considers the Asian values model. Lizardo claims that Asian values do not have effects because not all Asian Americans share a Confucian heritage. However, the Asian values model is applicable to many familistic cultures including some non-Confucian Asian societies. Furthermore, Lizardo’s emphasis on the “nondeclarative” versus “declarative” aspects of culture is of limited relevance to understanding differences in educational attainment among youth. Lizardo assumes that values must be “declarative,” but basic sociology stipulates that children slowly internalize their values over the course of their socialization that is heavily influenced by parental values especially in the case of Asian Americans. Lizardo’s dismissal of Asian cultural effects on Asian American educational attainment is uninformed and unconvincing.

Relation of attitudes toward environment and animals with social and criminal-aggressive profile of adult inmates in school classes of a correctional facility
Aim of this research is to detect determinants and effects of environmental and animal-related attitudes of inmates. A sample of correctional facility inmates in the prison secondary school was collected in 2015 (class A=23 inmates, average 36 years, and B=12 inmates, average 33 years old, all male). Standardized questionnaires were answered and analytic statistics (Spearman test) was used. Preference for socialization or loneliness in nature or urban environment, aggression to animals, vegetarianism and susceptibility to environmental practices are correlated with the inmates criminal and behavioral profile as well as with their advancement in the education program of the prison school. Their education in prison seems to have positive environmental education effects. Positive attitudes of inmates toward animals is related with their family background, susceptibility of loneliness in nature, no hunting, involvement in environmental or cultural organization, susceptibility to impulsively impose protective values and norms, minimal aggressiveness, no crimes committed under angry circumstances or cyber-crimes, socializing in prison. Thereby, there is a noticeable accordance of vegetarianism, nature- and animal- attitudes of the inmates.
“But you are a woman. You do not count.” Does The Woman Count? A Study of Chimanande Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus
In many parts of Africa and in Nigerian in particular cultural obligations continues to traumatize the woman in many ways thus seeking to cripple her economically and to overpower her psychologically in spite of the woman’s self-actualization. This paper set out to re-assess Papa Nnukwu’s utterance to Aunty Ifeoma: “But you are a woman. You do not count,” in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus. Irrespective of Aunty Ifeoma’s selfless sacrifice to Papa Nnukwu as against Eugene’s total neglect of him, Papa Nnukwu still privileges father/son relationship which guarantees the transmission of patriarchal powers, its laws, its discourses and its social structures. The paper examined the topic using the feminist theory with particular reference to African Feminism. The paper re-affirmed the relevance of the woman within the family and society, and summarizes that the woman is indispensable in parenting which involves: nurturing, caring, and inculcating religions, moral values and discipline in the child. As a womanist Aunty Ifeoma shouldered the responsibility of the family morally, economically and psychologically. Unlike the uncompromising Eugene, Aunty Ifeoma negotiated with her family members for harmonious co-existence without over-looking discipline. She was also the sole sustenance of Papa Nnukwu in his life and in his death. As an individual she was highly educated, and as an accommodationist she communally bonded positively with the advantaged and the disadvantaged in society. The paper is of the opinion that the utterance of Papa Nnukwu was as obsolete as Papa himself who clanged to an archaic religion without followers. From the forgoing the woman is indispensable to the development of both man and society she is the nurturer, caretaker and cultural transmitter and these roles are not insignificant or are they signs of powerlessness as envisaged by patriarchy.
